A sincere thank you to all, 1 Beth Carlson By Bonnie Pasteur The old Junior high school property, 419 E. State Sycamore, would fit the needs of DeKalb County for office and parking space until probably the end of the century, according to county board member Paul Rasmussen. "I was surprised that more people did not vote in favor'' of a proposal made by Rasmussen at the board's June 18 meeting to spend up to $2,000 to evaluate that property for future member Carl Heinisch.

"We need to address three concerns: what the space needs of the county are; identify available space we have now-in the county home, the residence house in front of it, and the new public safety building; and where would the money come from?" "It was my opinion when we built the new Jail that we would use the old one for offices," said board member, Don Guilford. Main St, Genoa, IL CCPT150AO member Jim Peterson voted while with 1980 construction costs J' 4 Sausage and Beans Tamplco Traditional beans and rice can take many forms with 21 other members voting "no." who seconded the motion, said he did so because without an engineer's report, the board doesn't know what costs are involved with remodeling of the 60,000 square foot building, as well as the possibility renting some space to other agencies in the county.

Rasmussen said taxpayers have told him that would be a good piece of land for the county to acquire. "The price was reasonable," he said. At the first auction of the property held in March the school board set a minimum asking price of $200,000 but no bids were received. A second auction is set for July 12. "The mood is for government people not to spend one dime," Rasmussen continued.

"I was expecting people to be willing to spend a little bit of money on a study. Maybe if we had started on it six months ago we could have generated more interest." He feels after that property, located Just three blocks east of the courthouse, is sold, it might not be easy to find acreage for sale with as much parking and other space available. "We might have to destroy buildings to find that," Rasmussen said. Board member Paul Montavon said he would support having a study done if it wouldn't cost the taxpayers any money. "The timing is off," said board that figure has climbed to with the costs of new construction at However, board member Ed Moore pointed out that "We don't know what it will cost to remodel the Junior high." Several board members felt they should not look at other facilities until the county's space needs for the next 10-20 years are determined, and until a decision is made on disposition of the old Jail.

In addition, board member Beryl Smith opposed the idea because as an older building, the Junior high would be energy inefficient, and it Is Just far enough away that-especially in winter-courthouse employees will not walk over to pass Information but will drive. "It is obsolete and the location is not good," Smith said of the building. County clerk Terry Desmond told board members if they would take time during the day to view the daily operations In the courthouse, they would see the crowded conditions, especially when court is In session and "lawyers have to meet with their clients in the hallway and on the steps." County administrative aide James Whitford said he Is working on a space needs study that will also show where space may be available in county buildings, and he will present that full report this fall.
