Curds take on Benet in play offs tomorrow Saturday afternoon at 1:30. But if the Cards do go on to defeat Benet tomorrow, they will advance to State Class 3A quarterfinals. There they will meet the winner of the Sycamore-Immaculate Conception contest that is also being played tomorrow afternoon. If Sycamore and Dundee win the quarterfinal game will be played at Spain Field this He's also easy to spot. He's the only player wearing a gold helmet.

Cederblad awards gold helmets to any player who achieves 1,000 Eoints from the coaching staff for is achievements. Webb is the first junior to ever win the award at Benet. According to Curtright, the Redwings operate out of an formation and rely primarily on their running game. Junior quarterback Jim Gorman (6-0, la) ran the offense last week, but he is reportedly filling in for senior Joe Wilke, who was injured. "They're not really a passing club," said Curtright, "but they probably will against us because of how tight we've been playing our defense lately." Saturday, Benet outrushed Marian 202 yards to 28, but completed only one of eight passes for 15 yards with two interceptions.

The Redwings had 217 total yards compared to just 79 for Marian. well-prepared for it. He had already deduced that if Dundee beat Gary -Grove and won the coin toss for the play-off spot, Benet would be the Cards' probable opponent in the opening round. As it turned out, he was quite a prophet. Saturday night a committee of Illinois High School Association officials announced their pairings that pitted the Cards against the Redwings.

And true to form, Curtright had already arranged to have his staff scout the Benet Marian game Saturday. Benet Coach Tim Cederblad was equally optimistic, but a less proficient guesser. His staff scouted three teams, but not the Cards. Consequently, Dundee will have a better idea of what to expect when they square off against the Redwings tomorrow at 1:30 in Lisle. The Card scouts saw Benet dismantle Marian 19-6 Saturday afternoon, and called a "no-contact" practice Sunday afternoon to go over Benet's offensive and defensive alignments.

Curtright is preparing his squad with three light workouts before their preliminary round game tomorrow. Any players who are at all injured will not even suit up for the practices. Included among the walking (or limping) wounded is quarterback Steve Roesslein, who played most of Saturday's second half with a sprained ankle. Although the Dundee senior says he'll be ready by Wednesday, Curtright warns that the Cards "aren't counting on him to be ready." If Roesslein does not play, junior Jeff Doran will get the call for the Cardunals. Nor is Dave Boedigheimer expected to play on offense.

The Card halfback, who has racked up 946 yards rushing this season, has been operating on a bad ankle. He won't suit up for practice, but is by KEN DUNWOODY Sports Editor No one can ever accuse Jerry Curtright of being a pessimist. While many of his players assumed they were playing their final game last Saturday, the Dundee coach was stalking the sidelines telling the team to "be optimistic" because "we're going to have a game Wednesday." Not only was Curtright correct in his prediction, but he was also Quarterback Steve Roesslein showed up at Sunday's practice on crutches with a sprained ankle. -4 r- THE SCORES Cardunals Dundee 12, Antioch 6 Dundee 12, Lake Zurich 6 (OT) Dundee 24, Wauconda 20 Dundee 25, Round Lake 8 Stevenson 21, Dundee 0 Woodstock 15, Dundee 13 Warren 42, Dundee 8 Dundee 18, Cary-Grove 8 Overall 6-3: Conference 4-1 REDWINGS Lisle 14, Benet 0 Batavia 14, Benet 7 St Edward 20, Benet 0 Benet 21. And if the Cards can keep going, only two more games would separate them from the state championship. ft, I Dundee penetrated much better in the early going but couldn't find the endzone.

After coming up short on a fourth down run during their first possession, they came back with a drive to the Trojans' 40 before they were stopped. A fine catch by flanker Craig Behm was nullified by a holding penalty and forced a Cardunal punt, with Davis booming a 55-yard bomb all the way down to Cary-Grove's 5-yard line. After a 24-yard Trojan punt, the Cards marched down to Cary-Grove's nine-yard line before Ervin bobbled the pigskin to end the drive. Four plays later, however, Kennedy sailed a punt snap over the outstretched arms of 6-5 quarterback-punter Kurt Heidenreich and into the end zone. Behm corraled Heidenreich with the ball at the back of the end zone to give Dundee a safety and a 2-0 lead.

At this point senior quarterback Steve Roesslein was inserted into the game by Curtright in relief of junior starter Jeff Doran. Three plays later Roesslein and Boedigheimer missed connections on a hand-off at the Cary-Grove 30, handing the Trojans another gift. But again Cary-Grove treated the ball like a hot potato and graciously returned it to the Cards. Kennedy popped up continued on page Bl 3i T) It A "1 Hi in. Two other questionable starters are Mike Hale and Mike Benton, who have both been playing with nagging injuries. But whichever players do suit up for tomorrow's doAar-die game in Lisle, they'll be facing a Benet team that has grown accustomed to winning. -Mr wr by KEN DUNWOODY Sports Editor This is what the 1976 season has been all about. Ever since the first few weeks of practice in August, it's been no secret that Coach Jerry Curtright and his Cardunals had their sights set on a play-off berth in their new conference. And Saturday's 18-8 win over Cary-Grove, along with a little luck, has given Dundee their chance. The game wasn't half as exciting as what came afterwards. After learning that Stevenson and Lake Zurich had also won their games Saturday, Dundee athletic director Del Johnson drove immediately to Round Lake.

There, the athletic directors from the South Division's three tri-leaders met for a coin toss to determine the league's representative in the state playoffs. They flipped the coin three times, Johnson was the "odd man," and the Cards were tournament-bound in their rookie year in the Northwest Suburban. To no one's surprise, Dundee was then matched up with Benet, the co-winner of the West Suburban Catholic Conference for the preliminary game. A special committee of Illinois High School Association officials made the pairings Saturday night. But if a coin was the hero in Round Lake, there were at least four more for the Cards in Carv- Grove-Dave Ervin, Steve Roesslein, Doug Davis and Joe Kennedy.

If no one recognizes Kennedy's name, it's because he plays for the Trojans. His three sky-high punt snaps handed Dundee two safeties and a 4-0 halftime lead. Other than those miscues, it was a rather uneventful opening half. Cary-Grove was forced to punt the ball away on their first three possessions, never getting any further than their own 45-yard line.
