The reader recently wrote the LIFE asking why the even street numbers on 20th, 21st, 19th and 16th sts.

are on the soith side of the street while the even numbers on Cermak rd. and Roosevelt rd. are on the north side of the street. A search by the city attorney revealed that the city code calls for all even numbers to be on the south side of the street on east and west city thoroughfares, and on the west side on all north and southbound streets. Vowing that as far as he knew the house numbering has been the same since time immemorial," Pavek, stated that the only reason he could give for the oddity was one of convenience.

Its possible the different numbering occurred before the present ordinance was adopted, thus making impossible a change with' out the owners consent, the city attorney explained. Also the even numbers on the north side of Cermak and Roose velt rds. may have been allowed to conform with Oak Park, Cicero and Chicago numbers thus saving a lot of confusion in deliveries. They may also have been permitted as an aid to shoppers, Pavek stated. 1 7.
